How to Make Body Scrubs at Home

If you've ever wondered why anyone would want to know how to make body scrubs, it's really quite simple. Body scrubs can be made at home, easily for just a few cents, and best of all they can be tailor made to suit your specific skin type. What's more these fragrant indulgent spa type products make wonderful gifts for friends and family.

Body scrubs are a real treat for our skin because they gently exfoliate, removing all the dead cells, leaving the skin healthy and glowing and ready to receive any moisturiser we care to throw at hit. When you learn how to make body scrubs tailored for your skin's specific needs, you really are giving your skin a much needed makeover.

Don't worry that you won't be able to make your own scrubs - honestly, they are so simple that a child could make them. Exfoliating body scrubs can be made with a variety of ingredients but generally consist of an exfoliant, which can be salt, sugar or other natural ground product such as coffee or oatmeal combined with some form of liquid.

Some people prefer to buy their own liquid bases such as shampoos or lotions, whereas others like to make their own bases from a combination of nourishing oils, essential oils, fragrances and/or soap bases. How luxurious or simple you make a scrub is totally up to you.

There a few things to take consideration when you want to know how to make body scrubs. Firstly, you need to decide what type of fragrance you want. Essential oils can be quite costly but you get a lot of bang for your buck. Because they are totally natural and contain oil extracts from plants and herbs they are very concentrated, so a little goes a long way.

Different essential oils convey different meanings. For example lavender is well known to be relaxing, citrus or peppermint is invigorating and gives a good wake up call and patchouli or sandalwood are earthy and sensual.

When it comes to choosing the type of exfoliant to use in your scrubs, it can be determined by skin type. Salt is generally best for oily skin because it has a dehydrating effect but should only be used once a week at most. Sugar is best for dry skin because it has a hydrating effect and can be used daily, if wanted, with no problem.

Oatmeal is a good base for itchy skin and it has a natural soothing effect plus if you combine it with an oil, such as almond or olive, the end result is a scrub that will soothe as it gently exfoliates and moisturises. Coffee works well on normal skin and is unique in the fact that it can help to shrink varicose veins!

One of my personal favourite body scrubs that can be used on normal to dry skin is Ginger Bread Delight and the recipe is below for you to try.

Ginger Bread Delight Recipe

This scrub smells so yummy!

Ingredients:

1 teaspoon ginger powder

2 tablespoons almond meal

1 cup brown sugar

2 tablespoons honey granules

Instructions:

Mix all the ingredients and place in a jar. To use, add enough water to make into a thick paste. Scrub on to your skin gently. Rinse.

Just bear in mind when learning how to make body scrubs that because a lot of scrubs that you make contain fresh ingredients, you will need to keep them refrigerated and their shelf life will be limited.

Now I've got you interested in making bath scrubs why not go even further and learn how to make other spa quality products either for fun or profit? The spa industry is the fourth largest industry in the States so people are obviously keen to purchase in that sector.
